We are pleased to welcome Dr. Axel Zander to the faculty in the Division of Hematology and Hematologic Malignancies. Dr. Zander will assume the Interim Directorship of the HCI Bone Marrow Transplant program. Dr. Zander is an internationally recognized expert in bone marrow transplantation and stem cell research, with particular expertise in novel clinical uses of adult stem cells in regenerative medicine. Dr. Zander received his MD from the University of Lübeck, Germany. He completed his internship and residence in the US, followed by a fellowship in Hematology/Oncology at the University of Illinois in Chicago. He served on the faculty at both the University of Illinois and MD Anderson before becoming Chief of Bone Marrow Transplant at Pacific Presbyterian Medical Center in San Francisco. In 1990 he was recruited to set up the BMT Program at the University Hospital in Hamburg, Germany. Under his leadership the Hamburg BMT program grew into one of the largest in Europe, performing more than 200 transplants in 2014. Dr. Zander published close to 400 peer-reviewed manuscripts related to his research in the field of BMT, immunotherapy and regenerative medicine. Dr. Zander is a recognized leader in his field of research and has patented several important discoveries over his distinguished career.
