Dr. Daniel Leung Named 2025 Outstanding Undergraduate Research Mentor

The Department of Internal Medicine is pleased to share that Daniel Leung, MD, MSc, was honored with the 2025 Outstanding Undergraduate Research Mentor Award for the School of Medicine. Presented by the University of Utah’s Office of Undergraduate Research (OUR), the award celebrates Dr. Leung’s exceptional commitment to mentoring undergraduate students and advancing a culture of research excellence on campus.

Dr. Leung received the award during the OUR Awards Ceremony, which took place on Wednesday, April 9, 2025, in the Saltair Room at the Olpin Student Union. The annual event brings together awardees, campus leadership, and university community members to recognize outstanding faculty mentors from each of the university’s 18 colleges. Awardees are nominated through an internal college-level selection process and reviewed by the OUR Advisory Council, a group of research leaders from across the university.

“Undergraduate researchers bring a tremendous amount of energy and curiosity to our research group. It is an honor to participate in their mentorship - to have the opportunity to make a difference in a student’s academic journey. Much credit also goes to the co-mentorship efforts by collaborating faculty members and the postdocs, graduate students, and staff in my lab.”

Dr. Leung, whose research spans infectious diseases and global health, has mentored numerous undergraduate students in meaningful, hands-on research experiences. His thoughtful guidance has helped launch student careers in science and medicine, contributing to impactful scholarship and publications.
