Josh Cates, PhD
Research Track Assistant Professor
Cardiovascular Medicine

Dr. Cates has a background in medical imaging, computer science, biology, and mathematics. He holds a PhD in Computer Science from the University of Utah and both an MS in Computer Science and a BS in Biology from the University of Tennessee, Knoxville. In collaboration with cardiac electrophysiologists and MR imaging researchers, Dr. Cates is investigating novel image analysis techniques for measuring cardiac structure and function. Dr. Cates is also the Director of Research and Development for OrthoGrid Systems, LLC, a Salt Lake City medical device company specializing in intraoperative imaging solutions for orthopedic surgeries.

Previously, Dr. Cates held a research scientist position at the Scientific Computing and Imaging institute at the University of Utah, served as Director of the Health Sciences Biomedical Image and Data Analysis Core Facility, and led software development projects for the Technology Venture and Commercialization Office.

Danette Borg

Danette was born and raised in California. She received her BSN from BYU. The majority of her nursing career has been in various ICUs with Intermountain Health Care, except for three years when she was on the acute pain service at LDS Hospital. She went on to graduate from the University of Cincinnati in 2014 as an adult-gerontology acute care NP. In early 2017, Danette joined the University of Utah as an NP for SICU and CVICU. She recently joined the Division of Nephrology and is very excited to have joined Wasatch Kidney Specialists to learn all there is to know about kidneys and dialysis! She works primarily at West Valley Dialysis Center.

Danette enjoys travel and her most memorable trips have been to Kenya and Namibia as a volunteer research assistant. She had also traveled to the Dominican Republic with her partner where they discovered the best coffee on Earth. She is also an animal lover and has one dog, two cats, and two bunnies (all rescues).

Emily Dalling

Emily Dalling works as a dialysis technician with Gem State Dialysis in Idaho Falls. She was introduced to dialysis by a mentor who encouraged her to apply for the position. She enjoys working in dialysis and is grateful for the opportunity to learn about dialysis.  

Emily is 22 years old and lives in Rexburg, Idaho. She met her husband while working as river guides on the Salmon River. They enjoy kayaking, rafting, rock climbing, hiking, and really anything outsidoors. She also loves painting with watercolors and exploring different types of creative pursuits.

Andrea Kalvesmaki
Senior Research Analyst
Epidemiology

Andrea Kalvesmaki serves as senior research analyst for the Division of Epidemiology in the University of Utah, School of Medicine. Her research explores and examines various short and long-term outcomes of vulnerable populations related to health, well-being, and long-term success. She joined the TORCH (Trajectories of Resilience, Communities, and Health) team in May 2018, and is thrilled to work on research examining outcomes for veterans with traumatic brain injury (TBI) and other comorbid conditions.
Andrea holds degrees in psychology and medical anthropology, and is working on a doctorate in education policy. Her doctoral dissertation examines how school discipline policies at the federal, state, and local level impact vulnerable children, especially minority children, children in high poverty areas, and/or children with disabilities. She has a strong background in translational and mixed method research, emphasizing how the stories behind data are what drive us to improve access to services for people in need.

Bronson Nye

Bronson loves the Utah mountains and strives to spend as much time as he can with his wife and three children doing anything they can outdoors. Some of his favorite places to be are either on a snowboard at a ski resort in the winter or in any one of the national and state parks. Bronson is a charismatic leader with more than six years of experience directing soldiers as an officer in the Army National Guard. He loves working to discover how and why things work with
a primary interest in people and healthcare. This intrinsic drive led him to earn a master of science in Biomedical Diagnostics. He enjoys helping others and is especially concerned with the wellbeing of his fellow soldiers, which is why he is committed to improving the lives of veterans by guiding the TORCH team towards success.

Rebecca Phariss

Becky has been a medical transcriptionist for over 25 years, mainly in the acute care setting. She is originally from the Sacramento/Lake Tahoe area and moved to the small town of Orofino, Idaho, immediately following her husband’s retirement from the Placer County Sheriff’s Department several years ago.

Becky has a very close-knit family that includes two siblings, three children, and is “Grambek” to numerous grandchildren. For fun, she enjoys hiking, mountain biking, riding dirt bikes, and hanging out with her husband of 28 years and two long-coat German shepherds, affectionately referred to as the “germs.”

Jacqueline Sadock

Jackie is originally from the Greater Philadelphia Area. She graduated magna cum laude with a bachelor of arts degree in communication arts from Salisbury University in Salisbury, Maryland. After college, she worked for more than three years as a staff writer, photographer and videographer for a community newspaper were she received an award from the New Jersey Press Association for her work in business writing. For the last three years, she was the administrative assistant for the College of Liberal Arts Dean’s Office at Bloomsburg University in Northeast Pennsylvania. She is proud of the work she did there developing their annual Liberal Arts Symposium.

Jackie and her husband returned to the Wasatch Valley in April after having previously lived in Salt Lake City from 2012 to 2015. Her and her husband have two dogs, Gigi and Zoe.
