Congratulations to Saundra S. Buys, MD who has been appointed as chief of the Division of Oncology, effective July 1, 2018, for a two-year term. Dr. Buys received her MD from Tufts University in Boston, Massachusetts, and completed an internship and residency in internal medicine, along with a fellowship in hematology and oncology, at the University of Utah. She has been a pillar in the division since she began caring for cancer patients at the University of Utah in 1982. She specializes in breast cancer and was recognized last year by Forbes as one of the top breast cancer physicians in the country. Dr. Buys is also the principal investigator on two large studies funded by the National Cancer Institute, including one that centers around some of the genetic causes of breast cancer. Dr. Buys will replace N. Lynn Henry, MD, PhD who has been serving as the interim chief for the past year. We appreciate Dr. Henry’s commitment to scholarship and her strong mentorship of the early-career faculty. A significant amount of her effort was focused on improving the quality of life for division faculty members, along with recruitment of new faculty. She was recently named Leader of the Women’s Cancers’ Center for Excellence at Huntsman Cancer Institute, and she will continue to focus on her research addressing toxicity and symptom management for women with breast cancer. We thank Dr. Henry for her tireless work on behalf of the division and the department.
