Code of Aspirational Professionalism

Dear Colleagues,

In 2019, our Wellness Champion team (Aaron Bell, Director of Accounting, Finance & Operations; Dori Knight, Operations Managers, Faculty Affairs and Employee Wellness; Mencily Lee, Administrative Manager; Mandy Skonhovd, Events & Communications Specialist) sent a call for volunteers to address workplace incivility and its impact on environmental wellness. A Professionalism Enrichment Committee was formed with representation from department faculty from both U of U Health and the Salt Lake City VA, APCs and staff members, and this group worked throughout the rest of the year to create a Code of Aspirational Professionalism. This Code was designed to actively raise and maintain awareness of professionalism and respect, and help to establish an improved culture throughout the Department.

Though this project began before Dr. Inadomi's tenure as Department Chair and faced many COVID-19 related setbacks in 2020, we are fully supportive of the Code of Aspirational Professionalism, and are proud to share it with you now. Please see image to the right or click here for PDF.

With the recent announcement of the University's Abuse of Conduct Policy and the Culture of Respect training in Bridge, there can be no better time to show our steadfast support of providing and maintaining a safe, positive, and healthy environment for our faculty, staff, trainees and patients.

We intend for this Code to be included in new employee orientation and incorporated into the annual review process as a part of a regular review of professionalism. We ask all current employees to review the Code and commit to modeling our ideals of humanism, excellence and respect in your work.

We want to thank our Wellness Champions team for piloting this important initiative; we also thank the many members of our Professionalism Enrichment Committee who took the time from their schedules to attend meetings and lend their voices to the cause.

For questions about our Code of Aspirational Professionalism, please contact Dori Knight (dori.knight@hsc.utah.edu).

Sincerely,

John M. Inadomi, MD
