Applications from individuals with diverse backgrounds and in any topic relevant to the broad mission of NIH are welcome. This award complements ongoing efforts by NIH to fund early stage investigators through R01 grants, which continue to be the major source of NIH support for early stage investigators. The NIH Director’s New Innovator Award is a component of the High-Risk, High-Reward Research program of the NIH Common Fund.

The NIH Director's Transformative Research Award supports individual scientists or groups of scientists proposing groundbreaking, exceptionally innovative, original, and/or unconventional research with the potential to create new scientific paradigms, establish entirely new and improved clinical approaches, or develop transformative technologies.
