NIH Seeks Comments on Proposals for Reducing Regulatory Burden in Animal Research
The NIH today issued a request for information on a new report, also published in the Federal Register. The report, issued by an NIH, USDA, and FDA interagency working group headed by the NIH Office of Laboratory Animal Research (OLAW), is titled Reducing Administrative Burden for Researchers: Animal Care and Use in Research. Responding to a directive in the 21st Century Cures Act, the committee report provides a side-by-side commentary on various proposals to address redundant or ineffective regulation, including proposals submitted in collaboration by the AAMC, FASEB, COGR, and NABR. Mike Lauer, MD, NIH Deputy Director for Extramural Research, explains the background and purpose of the RFI in an Open Mike blog post. We urge institutions to provide feedback to the NIH website by the deadline, February 5. For more information, see the AAMC Reducing Regulatory Burden page or contact Stephen Heinig, AAMC Director, Science Policy.  [From the AAMC 12/7/18]
