Tips for Avoiding a Funding Gap

Do you have a grant that is coming to an end? The National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) provides some helpful suggestions in their January 23, 2019 funding news for avoiding gaps in funding:
  1. Plan now to avoid the gap
    1. Apply for your renewal early
    2. Apply for another R01
  2. Give yourself multiple streams of funding
    1. Spin off your research into a small grant (R03) or an exploratory/developmental grant (R21)
    2. Contract with NIH (Search for NIH Contracts here)
  3. Collaborate
    1. Lead a component on a multi-component application (P or U applications)
    2. Respond to RFAs for cooperative agreements (RFAs carrying activity codes “U”)
    3. Seek supplemental funding to join another research’s project
    4. Consult for other scientists, especially NIH-funded PIs
  4. Publish (approves renewal application and provides opportunities to collaborate)
  5. Look at other options
    1. Institutional support
    2. Support doctoral students and postdocs on NIH training (T), career development (K) and fellowship (F) grants
    3. Find non-government sources (nonprofits, endowments foundations, etc.)
