Sydney Hartsell, MD, Earns 'Best Poster' Award at AHA Hypertension Council Meeting

Sydney Hartsell, MD, a nephrology fellow, earned the “Best Poster” award at the American Heart Association (AHA) Hypertension Council meeting, held in Chicago from September 5-8, 2024. Her project, titled “GLP1-Receptor Agonists, SGLT2 Inhibitors, and HFpEF Protection: Weight Loss is Not a Major Mediator”, captured attention for its innovative approach to understanding heart failure with preserved ejection fraction (HFpEF) beyond weight loss. Her work, developed in collaboration with co-authors Guo Wei, Shalini Kasera, Ravinder Singh, Amara Sarwal, McKenna R. Nevers, Robert E. Boucher, and Srinivasan Beddhu, earned her the AHA’s Trainee Advocacy Committee Poster Award, celebrating top contributions by trainees in hypertension research. 

Dr. Hartsell earned her MD/MPH at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and completed her Internal Medicine residency at the University of Utah. She is currently a PGY6 Nephrology Research Fellow with a focus on cardiorenal syndrome. She is supported by the CVT32 Training Grant in Cardiovascular Research with Dr. Stavros Drakos and Dr. Robin Shaw of the Nora Eccles Harrison CVRTI, along with strong multidisciplinary guidance from primary research mentors Dr. Srinivasan Beddhu, Dr. Tom Greene and Dr. Jincheng Shen.
