2024 Faculty Awards & Recognition Ceremony
Last month, we came together to honor our outstanding faculty members who have achieved promotions and received departmental recognition for their hard work. We deeply appreciate the dedication of all our faculty, who make the Department of Internal Medicine an excellent place to practice and advance medicine. The ceremony, hosted by Dr. John Inadomi, our Department Chair, was a testament to their accomplishments.

Award Winners
Robert Paine III, MD - DOIM Lifetime Achievement Award
Robert Paine III, MD, is an experienced Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine physician who has been board certified in Internal Medicine, Pulmonary Medicine and Critical Care Medicine. He cares for outpatients with a wide variety of pulmonary problems and has particular interest in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and unexplained shortness of breath. He has a major interest in care of critically ill patients in the medical intensive care unit (MICU) and has an ongoing research program related to the causes and treatment of acute lung injury.
John D. Phillips, PhD - Service to the Department Award
John D. Phillips, PhD, is a Research Professor in the Division of Hematology and Hematologic Malignancies, Department of Internal Medicine at the University of Utah. In addition, he is an Adjunct Associate Professor in the Department of Pathology. Dr. Phillips is also Director of the University of Utah Health Sciences Center (HSC) Core Research Facilities. His research focuses on porphyria and porphyrin biosynthesis. Dr. Phillips obtained his B.S. from University of New Hampshire, and then his Ph.D. from Dartmouth College.
Hanadi Farrukh, MD - Thomas H. Caine Award for Clinical Excellence
Hanadi Farrukh, MD is an Assistant Professor of Medicine at the University Of Utah School Of Medicine. She practices as an Internist at the University of Utah Madsen Internal Medicine Clinic. She completed her medical school at the American University of Beirut and residency training at the University of Utah. She joined the Faculty of General Internal Medicine in July of 1994.
Her specialty is to provide preventive and acute management of Internal Medicine diseases for adults, that include but is not limited to hypertension, hyperlipidemia, diabetes, women’s and men’s health in an academic environment.
Dr. Farrukh is board-certified in Internal Medicine. She served as the Medical Director of Madsen Internal Medicine Clinic for 12 years. She serves on multiple leadership committees within the University Healthcare. She participated in Clinical research in the field of hypertension and pneumonia. She is also an Educator-Clinician who supervises medical students and residents in the field of Internal Medicine.
A. Taylor Kelley, MD, MPH, MSc - William D. Odell and Margaret F. Odell Junior Investigator Award
A. Taylor Kelley, MD, MPH, MSc, is an assistant professor in the Division of General Internal Medicine and a primary care physician in the Vulnerable Veteran Innovative Patient-Aligned Care Team Initiative (VIP) clinic at the Salt Lake City VA. As a general internist and pediatrician, his research interests include access to care for vulnerable populations, with focus on immigrants, veterans, and individuals covered by Medicaid.
Dr. Kelley received undergraduate degree from Brigham Young University and his medical degree from the University of Texas McGovern Medical School at Houston. He completed residency training in internal medicine and pediatrics at Yale-New Haven Hospital and a health services research fellowship in the National Clinician Scholars Program at the University of Michigan. He holds a master of public health degree from Harvard and master of science degree in health care research from the University of Michigan. He is a board certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine.
Mary Jo Pugh, PhD, RN - John R. Hoidal Senior Investigator Award
Mary Jo Pugh PhD, RN, is a retired Air Force nurse and Professor, Department of Internal Medicine, Division of Epidemiology at the University of Utah School of Medicine. She is an investigator at the Informatics, Decision-Enhancement and Analytic Sciences Center of Innovation (IDEAS COIN) and the VA Salt Lake City where she leads the COIN focus area that aims to identify and mitigate health risks in Veterans across periods of vulnerability.
Integrating her training as a Veteran, a nurse and a developmental psychologist, she has developed an epidemiological research program to examine the long-term sequelae and outcomes of military exposures. Early in her career she focused on outcomes associated with suboptimal quality of care in older Veterans. Over the past decade she has targeted her work using VA data to identify phenotypes in populations with complex comorbidity such as those with traumatic brain injury (TBI) and complex multi-symptom illness in Gulf War era Veterans. Dr. Pugh’s current work related to TBI includes longitudinal observational and prospective studies to identify the emergence of distinct neurodegenerative conditions such as cognitive impairment and epilepsy, and clusters of multimorbidity that may have similar or networked biological underpinnings.
Molly Conroy MD, MPH - Guy A. Zimmerman, MD Faculty Mentoring Award
Molly Conroy MD, MPH is a Primary Care Provider and General Internist at the Madsen Internal Medicine Clinic. As a General Internist, her clinical interests include physical activity and lifestyle counseling, weight management, cardiovascular disease prevention, hypertension management, and women’s health.
Dr. Conroy received her undergraduate degree from Stanford University and her MD from the University of Pennsylvania. She completed an Internal Medicine residency in the Primary Care Track at the University of California, San Francisco and a General Internal Medicine Fellowship at Harvard Medical School/Massachusetts General Hospital. She is Board Certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine and recognized as a Fellow of both the American College of Sports Medicine and the American Heart Association.
Douglas Sborov, MD, MS - Resident Mentor of the Year
Douglas Sborov, MD, MS, is an Associate Professor at the University of Utah (UU) – Huntsman Cancer Institute (HCI), Department of Internal Medicine - Division of Hematology and Hematologic Malignancies. He is the Director of the HCI Hematology Disease Center and Plasma Cell Dyscrasias (PCD) Program, Co-Leader of the Hematologic Malignancies Clinical Trials Research Group, and member of the HCI Experimental Therapeutics Program and International Myeloma Working Group (IMWG). He is an elected Huntsman Translational Scholar, member of the Alliance and SWOG Myeloma Committees, Society of Medical Oncology (SUMO) Board member, and member of the American Society of Hematology (ASH) Foundation and Communications Committees. Dr. Sborov’s research is focused on investigating novel targeted and immunologic therapies for patients with multiple myeloma and he is the principal investigator of a multiple of trials in patients with plasma cell dyscrasias and is actively involved in early drug development and other translational collaborations. Dr. Sborov is working closely with the entire multiple myeloma team to further develop a state-of-the-art clinical trial and research program that offers patients the opportunity to take part in advancing cutting edge, high quality, next generation treatment options.
